Tracy Brady on Periscope
Have you ever wished you could instantly share a moment with the world as it happens? Periscope makes this a reality and can add a creative twist to student presentations.
Tracy Brady is a teacher at Hastings High School in Hastings-On-Hudson, NY. She describes herself as a French and Spanish teacher - passionate about technology and changing the world one student at a time. She loves to use technology to reach outside the classroom. Today she is sharing her use of Periscope, a video streaming mobile app that integrates with Twitter. The app allows users to broadcast live from anywhere in the world.
A group of educators use Periscope to present monthly scopes. The group is known as #PasstheScopeEDU. Each scope is 5-10 minutes long and covers a variety of topics. Tracy is a long time member of the group and enlisted her French class to participate in the International Day of Peace episode. They performed the Grégoire song “Toi Plus Moi” (“You and Me”) to a live global audience. Her Spanish 3 classes have been working on a Global Water Scarcity project, and Periscope enabled them to share their work with a global audience. One student even had the opportunity to share his ideas on how to raise funds to support the project.
To address student privacy, Tracey obtains a permission slip from each parent. She also recommends before using Periscope safeguarding your location and limiting comments to only people you follow. This controls who can comment during and after the live broadcast.
Tracey invites you to search #PasstheScopeEDU and join the group. “On peut s'enfuir bien plus haut que nos reves.” (“We can escape much higher than our dreams.”) Whether or not you choose to become involved with #PasstheScopeEDU, connecting with other educators online can be an incredibly valuable professional development opportunity. Tracy is involved in a number of different online communities and provides some really valuable information.
